Think Progress

Think Progress reports that Al Jazeera aired an interesting report of Christian members of the U.S. military trying to convert Afghans. They had many Bibles in Pashto and Dari, the languages of Afghanistan, with them, seemingly in order to give them to Afghans.

US military rules are clear about ‘proselytizing’: it is not allowed. American soldiers represent their country, not their God. Especially considering Afghanistan’s extremely conservative – and not very tolerant culture, to put it mildly – this could be highly problematic.

The Al Jazeera report shows Lt. Col. Gary Hensley, the chief of the US military chaplains in Afghanistan, telling a congregation of U.S. servicemembers that: “The special forces guys — they hunt men basically. We do the same things as Christians, we hunt people for Jesus.MORE
