The Pakistan army continues to take on the Taliban in the Swat Valley. Where it first had to push the extremist organization back to its strongholds after its forces came close to the nation’s capital, the army now attacks the strongholds themselves.

The army has pushed into Mingora, where it says some 10,000 to 20,000 residents are stranded in the city as soldiers fight street-to-street against insurgents

Mingora is sometimes called “Taliban city.” And rightly so. It’s the group’s main powerbase in Pakistan.MORE

The offensive the Pakistani army launched against the Taliban last week seems to be going rather well. The army says that it has killed scores of militants, and that it is slowly taking control of regions it lost to the extremist organization earlier this year.MORE

Pakistani troops continue to fight Taliban in Bajur. Earlier Wednesday they succeeded in taking back a key town in the district.

“We have taken control of Dagar town and an operation by the ground forces is under way,” a senior military officer told AFP.MORE

The Pakistani army continued its offensive against the Taliban in the Swat Valley (or tribal region) on Friday:

Pakistan’s army, which launched its assault last month, said Thursday that its troops had advanced to within four miles (six kilometers) of Mingora and urged people to flee.MORE

The Associated Press reports that the Pakistani army launched a new offensive against the Taliban on Sunday.

The offensive causes reporters to wonder whether the deal struck between the Taliban in the Swat Valley and Islamabad remains intact. This deal allowed the Taliban to make their interpretation of Sharia the official law of the region.MORE
