The American journalist sentenced to eight years in jail in Iran has gone on a hunger strike. Roxan Saberi’s parents said earlier this week that she told them she would. Saturday, her father said Saberi had followed through on her threat.
Hunger strikes are the result of desperation – but often also of courage. Saberi deserves our respect. She is not willing to lie down and let the Mullahs in charge of Iran bully her into submission.
“She went on a hunger strike Tuesday to protest her imprisonment. Today is the fifth day,” Reza Saberi told The Associated Press. “She will remain on hunger strike until she is freed.”
Her father said Roxana’s lawyer, Abdolsamad Khorramshahi, has appealed the sentence.
“The lawyer filed his appeal today,” he said.
She and her lawyer continue to fight for her release, in other words. Everybody knows she is no spy – she was not convicted because she did anything wrong, but because Iran’s hardliners wanted to deliver the U.S. a blow and to embarrass it.| MORE
