Via Hot Air, The Right Sphere’s Brandon Kiser argues that Media Matters’ focus of their attacks on Fox News, means that the site should reconsider its IRS 501(c)(3) status:

The cutesy-sounding mission of Media Matters to “correct conservative misinformation” is no longer even remotely appropriate. No, MMFA is a political group with $10 million-plus in annual funding designed to wage war against Fox News, and in their eyes the GOP and conservatives as a whole.

Kiser writes his opinion that MMFA may never have qualified for 501(c)(3).  How so?  According to the law, 501(c)(3) organizations cannot endorse or be involved with (or against) a candidate for office.  However, they may take positions on broader issues. Further, the law doesn’t make an specific prohibition of campaigning against news organizations or political parties themselves, only individual campaigns.MORE
