In a surprise turnaround that will cost the city $260 million in back taxes and untold millions in future lost revenue, Hillary Rodham Clinton’s State Department has quietly reversed a longstanding policy requiring foreign governments to pay taxes on some diplomatic residences.

It’s a shocking about-face by Secretary of State Clinton — who repeatedly spoke in favor of the city’s right to collect the taxes when she was New York’s junior senator…

The Big Apple, which recently won a federal court ruling requiring India and Mongolia to fork over some $46 million in back taxes, is expected to lose about $7 million a year in current tax revenues.MORE

The American journalist sentenced to eight years in jail in Iran has gone on a hunger strike. Roxan Saberi’s parents said earlier this week that she told them she would. Saturday, her father said Saberi had followed through on her threat.

Hunger strikes are the result of desperation – but often also of courage. Saberi deserves our respect.MORE

Roxan Saberi’s parents visited their daughter for the first time she was imprisoned in Iran. Saberi was (falsely of course) accused of spying for the U.S. government and sentenced to eight years in jail.

Her parents visited her today, Monday, and said she was in good condition.MORE

In talks with U.S. lawmakers with Fox News, General David Petraeus said Pakistan’s civilian government has two weeks to deal with the Taliban. If it does not get its act together beforehand, it will probably fall.MORE
