Back in the days of silent films, the weekly thrill a minute serial kept audiences on the edge of their seats, ending each week with the heroine or the hero facing looming disaster. For the past three decades, there has been a steady claim that the earth was facing disaster unless the world’s leading economies made substantial changes in how their populations live.MORE

R.I.P. Howard Zinn

Radical historian Howard Zinn has died. My sympathies go to his family. I will offer some thoughts about his work as a historian at a later time. This is not the time for a critical analysis of his work as a scholar. It is worth reporting that Mr. Zinn was a World War II veteran of the US Army Air Corps. Like Senator George McGovern, another World War II veteran Mr.MORE

The special election in Massachusetts is over, and the unexpected has occurred. A conservative Republican has been elected to fill the senate seat held for 47 years by Robert M. Kennedy, who came to be called the Liberal Lion of the Senate. Scott Brown’s victory over Martha Coakley should be a wake up call – to the leadership of both major political parties.MORE

After his election, I wished President-elect Obama well in the Oval office, and encouraged him to remember that many of the people who voted for him were voting for a centrist government, not a progressive one. The general public approval was high, and people were excited about the new President’s plans.MORE

Nearly two weeks after a close call on a Detroit bound flight, The President of the United States finally recognized something which had been obvious to most ordinary men and women in the street on December 25, 2009: The system failed. Dear Watson, that fact was elementary.MORE

A short teaser. More later, when I have more time. There are several good posts and threads of comments on Man Made Global Warming (AGW for the PC) on the Volokh Conspiracy. Ilya Somin’s recent post, yesterday, entitled “‘Climategate’ and the Social Validation of Knowledge” is worth looking at.MORE

Is the climate changing, and are we responsible?  It is a hotly debated question. However, the lack of readily accessible data, and the reluctance of some of the climate researchers to make all their data and research material available to skeptics has made some of the skeptics suspicious that perhaps the work wasn’t entirely up to generally recognized scientific standards.MORE

It’s STILL the economy, and stupid decisions by sixty years of politicians are coming home to roost. California is in economic collapse, and it isn’t pretty. The only way to correct the state of affairs will be painful, and cost everyone some grief, and plenty of cold cash. Economic irresponsibility has been a fine tradition in the Golden State.MORE

President Obama’s health care bill has been getting the majority of coverage for the last couple of months. It may not only be in trouble politically, but it is increasingly obvious that it is not going to reduce expenditures, and will probably increase the deficit. But the health care bill is small change compared to the other big bill pushed through by the Democratic party faithful.MORE

Global Warming and Academic Faddism
A quick follow up and minor corrective thought. Since the UK has a state church (The Church of England), perhaps the new faith of Progressiveism will be a a sect of the C of E. Dr. Joens should see the Bishop of Canterbury…MORE
Cooking the Books on Climate?
I agree with Doomed that there is a stewardship issue, but I do not think that should be a proxy for trashing the scientific method. Encouraging people, as individuals or corporately (be they Fortune 500 companies or…MORE
Cooking the Books on Climate?
Scott Mandia. Thanks for the list. The believers in Man-Made Global Warming (MMGW) or Anthropomorphic Global Warming (AGW) for the PC really don't have settled science on their side. The list you offer, like the list drawn…MORE
Cooking the Books on Climate?
A lot of us have had serious doubts about AGW. A lot of us have tended to think of it as a scam. The scary part is, we can see how this is operating. No differently than the Nixon White House, we have a select few who have…MORE
Upsets in Virginia and New Jersey
Yes, Hoffman was an odd choice. For all the reasons Jay C. offers, not a particularly good fit. He still did pretty well, even with all those disadvantages. Which seems to reinforce Interested's response to Doomed - that…MORE
Obama's safe schools czar encouraging sex with minors
Ugh. But not surprising. Dropping public campaign funding, Bill Ayers, Reverend Wright, ACORN and Van Jones. The list just keeps going on. The elites in the State Run Media keep studiously ignoring things that would have…MORE
Polanski Apologists
There really isn't much dispute about the facts. Roman Polanski drugged, raped, and sodomized a 13 year old girl. He knew, or at least had very good reason to believe this was a minor, not an adult or near-adult, because the…MORE
Polanski Apologists
Richard is correct, Polanski fled after pleading guilty to a lesser charge. However, the fact that the DA wants to hold him accountable is, to some of us, a good sign. A case can be made that Mr. Polanski is now guilty not…MORE
Hoist On Their Own Petard
Senate vacancies have almost always been problematic because partisan politics inescapably becomes an issue. I think one thing that might make a difference would be a change in how the laws could be changed. For example, a…MORE
The Gates Arrest: Commenting Before All the Facts Are In
Good post Michael. I think there is a lot of ground for appreciation that each party could have perhaps behaved slightly differently and defused the situation before Professor Gates ended up in the back of the patrol car.…MORE
