Brussels, Brussels, Brussels.

What in the world are you doing nowadays?

It all started so nice, a couple of years after World War II. Everybody ‘understood’ that European states had to learn to work together, to respect each other, and to become interconnected. If we didn’t, a third world war might not be far off.

Making continental free trade a top priority was, indeed, a great idea.

Somewhere along the way, however, you took a wrong turn. Suddenly we were ruled by an out-of-touch European elite, who didn’t care about the wishes of voters. They had their plans, Europeans themselves be damned.

The results are horrendous: the EU – and the Eurozone – has become bigger and bigger, and at the same time weaker and weaker. Every couple of years, a new state is added. That may not have been so bad if these were strong, vibrant states. Sadly, however, that’s not the case.

No, you’ve added one weak economy, troubled by debts it couldn’t pay back, after another. Greece, Spain… and completely useless Eastern European countries such as Bulgaria. (I mean, Bulgaria. And Romania. Really?)

That’s bad, but what’s even worse is that when you wanted to have a nice (yet unreadable and incomprehensible) constitution of your own, you decided to bypass the voters of the member states and force it upon them – this after they had voted against it in several referenda.

And then, to top it off, you decided to bail out one failing state after another… with taxpayers’ money. They made clear that they didn’t support these bailouts, but hey, they’re just a bunch of peasants, right, what do they know?

Brussels, dear Brussels. I once had faith in you. There was a time when I believed you would actually listen to our requests; that you would respect our opinions and that you would change Europe for the better.

I know realize I was a fool for trusting you. Your intentions were probably never good or, if they were, power and money have corrupted you.

Brussels, it breaks my heart to say it, but it’s time for you and us – European citizens – to go our separate ways. Let us live in peace, let our own governments keep their sovereignty.

Thank you.
