Is Charles Krauthammer right? I’m not sure, but he sure does make a lot of sense:

Look, [today's budget vote] is a way to say that what Clinton had said – that Democrats look as if they’re going to immediately demagogue this is completely true,” Krauthammer said. “It isn’t only that it is used to win the special election in New York State, but it’s being used in the Senate to make senators go on the record and thus embarrass them in the future.”

“You now own this,” Krauthammer went on to say about the conservative congressman. “Get the one man who can explain it, argue it and actually change minds on this. You need leadership on this or otherwise the Republicans are going to sink on this.”

Most other experts basically argue that Ryan is now done for. Many ‘liberal’ blogs and newspapers have already declared him dead politically.

However, is that true?

History teaches us that quitters will always lose, while those who persist often win. Republicans may have a problem on their hands, but if anybody is able to turn it around, it’s Ryan. He understands this issue better than most and he’s willing to put his career on the line in order to fight and win this battle. What other Republican is there who can lead on this issue?

There aren’t many, perhaps even none.

And guess what? If Republicans don’t lead on Medicare reform, Democrats will. And that’ll spell disaster for the GOP and America.

  1. Michael Merritt The problem, of course, is that we really need people like Ryan in the House (and the Senate) right now. A president can only do so much to influence budgetary matters. Congress is where all the legwork is done. A president Ryan would be one less vote to pass this stuff, because we don't know who'd replace him.
