Oh my, from the looks of it, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama aren’t exactly on the same page:

he day after the stunning upset in the special congressional election in upstate New York, Rep. Paul Ryan is a man under fire.

But ABC News was behind the scenes with the Wisconsin Congressman and GOP Budget Committee Chairman when he got some words of encouragement none other than former President Bill Clinton.

“So anyway, I told them before you got here, I said I’m glad we won this race in New York,” Clinton told Ryan, when the two met backstage at a forum on the national debt held by the Pete Peterson Foundation. But he added, “I hope Democrats don’t use this as an excuse to do nothing.”

Although Clinton is despised by most conservatives, I actually respect the guy. As a politician, at least (the details of his personal life are no concern to me). Yeah, he’s slimy, yeah he’s dodgy, and yes, he’s slick, but so are most other politicians. He’s just better at it than most – which is why he ended up in the White House for eight years.

Furthermore, unlike some Democrats, Clinton actually grasps the basic meaning of responsibility. He knows that Democrats could fare well by playing the Medicare card, but he refuses to play along. In fact, he even warns them against doing so – and the public against falling for it. Like the guy or not, that takes courage.

Word MESSAGE TO CONGRESS ON SOCIAL SECURITY. JANUARY 17,1935 In the important field of security for our old people, it seems necessary to adopt three principles: First, non-contributory old-age pensions for those who are now too old to build up their own insurance. It is, of course, clear that for perhaps thirty years to come funds will have to be provided by the States and the Federal Government to meet these pensions. Second, compulsory contributory annuities which in time will establish a self-supporting system for those now young and for future generations. ***********Third, voluntary contributory annuities by which individual initiative can increase the annual amounts received in old age. It is proposed that the Federal Government assume one-half of the cost of the old-age pension plan, which ought ultimately to be supplanted by self-supporting annuity plans.************* Even FDR recognized the need for people…Americans to contribute to their own Retirements……….. http://www.ssa.gov/history/fdrstmts.html#message1

Word The Act does not offer anyone, either individually or collectively, an easy life–nor was it ever intended so to do. None of the sums of money paid out to individuals in assistance or in insurance will spell anything approaching abundance. But they will furnish that minimum necessity to keep a foothold; and that is the kind of protection Americans want........FDR“A Social Security Program Must Include All Those Who Need Its Protection.” RADIO ADDRESS ON THE THIRD ANNIVERSARY OF THE SOCIAL SECURITY ACT. Word Lastly and Ill stop spamming on your site. I agree with your assessment of Clinton. While I am a conservative and did not vote for him I think he did a good job as president even though his personal life was sucky. That is why I hold out hope that Clinton will make his party understand that Medicare and SSI need to be addressed rather then going on another spending binge because they can. Even in looking back at FDR statements on SSI we can see that congress was continually tweaking, changing and modifying SSI in order to make it work. Its time to tweak it again so that it keeps working as intended.
  4. Michael van der Galien "Even FDR recognized the need for people…Americans to contribute to their own Retirements.' Of course - the Democrats have become more and more leftist in the days since FDR. Re. Clinton: agreed, wholeheartedly. Also: this has to be a bipartisan project. Neither party can go it alone.
