My state is in the news again! This time, a group of veteran Marines want to fly the Gadsden flag on the state Capitol on July 4th, but was denied their request. The flag has special significance for Americans, as the snake and motto emblazoned upon it were two of the chief symbols of the American Revolution. Throughout the years it has served as a reminder of the freedoms American fought for in that war. Recently, it has been taken up by the Tea Party movement for that purpose.| MORE

Conservative Washington Post columnist George F. Will has listed some important questions conservative members of the U.S. Senate have to ask Elena Kagan, Obama’s nominee to the Supreme Court. It’s a good list. Here are some of the best questions on it:
- Regarding campaign finance “reforms”:

I just don’t understand why David Frum defends one enemy of conservatism after another, while attacking every single influential conservative / libertarian pundit or politician who dares speak his (or her) mind.| MORE

More and more I’m drifting towards the notion that moderation isn’t as much about actual policies as it is about one’s (debating) style. There’s no such thing as inherently moderate policies. What’s a “moderate” foreign policy, for instance? Or a “moderate” economic policy? Most would probably define it as being “prudent” and pragmatic.| MORE

Is the idea of being a moderate in this highly politicized time an absurd notion? Doc Zero, writing at Hot Air, appears to answer “yes” to this question. His rationale is that there is no time to be a moderate, given the big-state policies we see being implemented today:| MORE

It’s getting rather old, but the Left continues to attack one of the most influential conservative women alive today: Former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin.
When she was invited to speak at Stanislaus university in California last Friday, leftist students immediately went through trash cans, trying to figure out how much Palin was being paid.| MORE

You know, I consider myself fairly socially liberal, particularly when it comes to sexual behavior. That is, I tend to think that the laws are mostly decent where they are now, though the cultural attitude could do with a slight adjustment in a less prudish direction.
That said, apparently even I’m too much of a prude, because I just learned that one Massachusetts school system believes that its nine and ten year olds need sexual protection:| MORE

When I read today that President Obama had replaced Gen. Stanley McChrystal with former Iraq and current Centcom commander Gen. David Petraeus, I nodded in approval. Though it is essentially a demotion for Petraeus (though I expect he’ll be back in a higher-up position before long), I think it makes sense, given the general’s experience in the region. Allah makes some good points to this end:| MORE

Michael Yon - a journalist with a lot of contacts in the army, and who has, among others, been embedded in Afghanistan and Iraq – has written a lot about the deteriorating situation in Afghanistan on his FaceBook page. He believes that both the military and civilian leaderships have failed in this war, and that McChrystal’s interview with Rolling Stone and the successive battle in the press are actually part of a political dog fight.| MORE
