Hot Air reports, quoting Politico, that when Senator Tom Coburn wanted to pitch his criticism of the Democrats’ health care plan last month, he decided to ignore conservative websites and, instead, turned to the Huffington Post.

Hot Air calls this decision “understandable yet repulsive.”

Understandable because the HuffPo is incredibly big and influential – ‘mainstream media’ reporters often visit the liberal news and opinion site in the morning in order to find items / news to write about – and repulsive because it is rather obviously a far-left website.

I share Hot Air’s initial concerns but have commend Coburn for his savviness. He wants to reach millions of people, people who may not read RedState and other conservative websites, but who can make a different nonetheless. The average American.

How do you reach them? Well, by using the MSM. How do you use the MSM? By posting at the HuffPo.

Is that fair? Of course it is not. But it is reality.

Instead of complaining, conservative bloggers should use Coburn’s decision as inspiration to persist and to become as big and powerful as the HuffPo; in fact, some of them are quite influential already, they just have to learn to use it.

  1. Michael Merritt Redstate basically is just talking to the wall as compared to Huffpo. What would they prefer, a direct appeal to more people, or a post on an ideologically pure site, followed by filtering elsewhere? To be fair, even going on Fox News would be better if you wanted to appeal to a larger audience. With the numbers they boast, it ought to be viewed by a lot of people.
