The New York Times reports that according to extensive polling and focus group sessions conducted by ecoAmerica, politicians, pundits and others are wise to drop the phrase “global warming” from their vocabulary.
‘The term turns people off, fostering images of shaggy-haired liberals, economic sacrifice and complex scientific disputes,’ the poll results show.
‘Instead of grim warnings about global warming, the firm advises, talk about “our deteriorating atmosphere.” Drop discussions of carbon dioxide and bring up “moving away from the dirty fuels of the past.” Don’t confuse people with cap and trade; use terms like “cap and cash back” or “pollution reduction refund”.’
Shorter: it’s Big Brother all the way, baby!

Environmental issues consistently rate near the bottom of public worry, according to many public opinion polls. A Pew Research Center poll released in January found global warming last among 20 voter concerns; it trailed issues like addressing moral decline and decreasing the influence of lobbyists. “We know why it’s lowest,” said Mr. Perkowitz, a marketer of outdoor clothing and home furnishings before he started ecoAmerica, whose activities are financed by corporations, foundations and individuals. “When someone thinks of global warming, they think of a politicized, polarized argument. When you say ‘global warming,’ a certain group of Americans think that’s a code word for progressive liberals, gay marriage and other such issues.”
That’s strange. Especially because those pushing ‘global warming’ through our collective throats are indeed all progressive liberals (what? Since when do we use progressive liberals to simply describe the loony left?) who want to use ‘global warming’ as a convenient excuse to push through radical plans they dreamed about implementing for years, decades even.
I think that there is more to it than that, though. Increasingly more voters realize that there exists no real ‘consensus’ on global warming. Mass media have tried to hide this fact from the public, but critical scientists have succeeded in sharing their views nonetheless.
It will be interesting to see whether ‘progressive liberals’ will stop using the term global warming and use ‘our deteriorating atmosphere’ instead. If so, they will see the public become even more critical: “our deteriorating atmosphere” is such an idiotic term, that the average voter will have no idea what the ‘progressive liberal’ politician is talking about.
