Hot Air notices the publication of a poll showing that 67% of Catholics approve of the job President Obama is currently doing. The conservative blog’s AllahPundit argues that this once again shows that many Catholics do not adhere to the Church’s basic teachings. Catholic readers of HA respond angrily to the poll, arguing that these ‘Catholics’ who approve of Obama are not Catholics at all.
The reason: Obama’s stance on abortion. Pope Benedict has criticized Obama, arguing that the new president supports infanticide and that Catholics cannot – ever – support such policies nor such politicians.
AP forgets that abortion may not be the key issue to many voters. We are not living in a perfect world. Many Catholics may disagree strongly with Obama’s views on abortion, for instance, but they may support his plans to ‘spread the wealth around.’
What matters more? What is more important? ‘Helping’ the poor (this is at least how many of these voters see it) or abortion? Besides, Obama has been in the White House for 100 days or so, but has taken no significant steps to turn his pro-abortion views into new policies.
Obama is even more popular among Jews (79%) and Muslims (85%). The reason? I think that both groups tend to be fiscally liberal. Furthermore, many Muslims can undoubtedly appreciate Obama’s views on foreign policy and, of course, his opposition to the war in Iraq and determination to withdraw troops as soon as possible.
Shorter: conservative Catholics can be angry about the high approval ratings, but many voters care about a variety of issues. Only a few are ‘one-issue voters.’
