In a sharply worded article the AP has finally taken notice of the Obama budget deficit and called it what it is – an economic nightmare. Moreover, Mr. Obama is identified as being part of the problem rather than the solution. Good to see a dose of reality in the morning news, even if the news is bad.| MORE

AFP reports:
Indian police and paramilitary forces locked down Kashmir’s summer capital to prevent anti-election demonstrations after protests flared overnight.
Troops patrolled the deserted streets of Srinagar, the urban hub of a nearly two-decade-old revolt against New Delhi’s rule of the Muslim-majority state.
“We’ve imposed restrictions on civilian movement to maintain law and order,” police officer Pervez Ahmed said as policemen raised barricades and stopped residents leaving their homes.

Australia said Wednesday that it would send more troops to Afghanistan in order to combat the resurgent Taliban.
“Today I have announced an increase in our troop commitment from 1,100 to around 1,550,” Prime Minister Kevin Rudd told reporters.
“Australia concurs with the United States that the current civilian and military strategy is not working,” he added.| MORE

Pakistani troops continue to fight Taliban in Bajur. Earlier Wednesday they succeeded in taking back a key town in the district.
“We have taken control of Dagar town and an operation by the ground forces is under way,” a senior military officer told AFP.
“Early morning Wednesday heliborne forces successfully landed at Dagar and surrounding areas and secured Dagar, headquarters of Buner district,” the military added in a statement. Dagar is Bajur’s capital, and has 25,000 inhabitants.| MORE

A man was in his truck when a criminal pushed him away from the steering wheel and stole the truck. With the owner still in it. The owner got out, somehow, and went to sit on the trailer.
Hot Air wonders why the owner got on the back in the first place. The answer, I think, is that he simply refused to hand over his truck. He was not about to give up. This was his truck, and it would go nowhere without him.

North Korea warned the United Nations on Wednesday that it would conduct a second nuclear test and to launch another ballistic missile unless the UN would “apologize” for its condemnation of the North’s recent rocket launch.
“Unless the UN Security Council offers an apology immediately, we will be forced to take additional self-defence measures to protect the highest interests of our republic,” a foreign ministry spokesman said in a statement carried by the official Korean Central News Agency.| MORE

Politico reports that Vice President Joe Biden was absolutely essential in convincing Senator Arlen Specter to join the Democratic Party. The two men spoke 14 times with each other in the past couple of months.
Biden has met or spoken on the phone with Specter an average of once a week since the Inauguration. And after Specter became one of three Senate Republicans to support the administration’s stimulus package, those conversations were increased.| MORE
