Who said miracles don’t exist? Liberal newspaper NRC Handelsblad published an article today in which it praises the Pope for his take on the AIDS problem in Africa. The headline: “factually, the Pope is right.”
The rest of the article explains that the Pope is right when he says that not the condom but monogamy will help Africa fight AIDS. Condoms may be effective in the Western world, but Africans simply refuse to use ‘em. Western governments and organizations have handed out free comdoms in Africa for years now, but study after study shows these efforts haven’t helped a bit. Even if Afrcans use it, condoms don’t help because they simply take greater risks, believing they are ‘safe.’
On the other hand, other studies have proved that the real problem isn’t condoms, but poligamy. Africans often have more than one regular sexpartner at a time. These ‘loose relationships’ are the true driving force behind the AIDS epedemic.
As coblogger Dirk Jan van Baar writes at Dagelijkse Standaard, a very courageous article from the NRC, considering impopularity of the pope and of religion in general in Europe these days.
