Rasmussen reports that support for the stimulus plan proposed by Democrats and passed by them in the U.S. House of Representatives goes down; only 42% of Americans support the plan. This despite a PR offensive launched by Democrats days ago.

To sum up:

1. Republicans voted against the plan

2. They then offered an alternative plan which would cost 50% less yet result in twice as many jobs (saved and / or created)

3. A minority of Americans support the Democratic plan, support dwindles daily

It isn’t going bad for Republicans at all; ironically, the very issue (economy) that caused them so much trouble last year now helps them recover.

Steve Krome Gallop has it at 52% in favor and 37% Opposed.
Gallup Poll. Jan. 27, 2009. N=1,053 adults nationwide. MoE ± 3. "As you may know, Congress is considering a new economic stimulus package of at least 800 billion dollars. Do you favor or oppose Congress passing this legislation?"

Claudia, Assistant Editor Hotline poll has it almost exactly like Gallup; 54% approve, 34% disapprove. I will admit however that it has been a brilliant move on the part of the House Republicans. They got Obama to put in huge amounts of tax cuts, pressured him to cut some projects they didn't like because they knew he was looking for bipartisan support and then they turned around and voted against it anyway. They got the best of both worlds, they got the bill changed so it was more Republican friendly, they got to vote against it but there is no way they can suffer bad political consequences for doing so. They won't suffer voter anger for blocking the bill because House Republicans lack the votes to do that and if the stimulus fails they can always say they voted against it in the first place. A harsh lesson for Obama to learn that you can reach out to others, but that doesn't mean they won't first take your hand and then slam it into a door.

c3 So far (though very early) the "loyal opposition" approach is working well for the Republicans

C Stanley Claudia: Obama stated on Jan 5 that he was recommending that the plan include about 40% tax cuts. It wasn't a concession squeezed in by the House GOP, it was Obama's original suggestion (in fact this got reduced to 33% after the 'negotiations.' Most of what's in there is Obama's campaign promise to cut taxes for 95% of individuals, with just a couple of token business tax reductions.
  5. Michael van der Galien I'm using iphone so will keep it short. Christine is right. Those tax cuts were promised by obama already. Those polls ask not the specifics of the plan, they didn't say that, only whether they supported plans to stimulate. The poll I cite asked and informed about the entire plan however so is more reliable

Jack J Isn't it ironic that we care what percentage of Americans support the proposed stimulus plan when 94% of Americans believe in God but we have to bow to the wishes of the remaining 6%. If you polled children to see how many would like to stay up late on a school night I'm sure they'd approve as well. Americans are hurting and need the economy to improve, that's a no brainer. But if you polled those same Americans who support the stimulus plan to find out how many actually know whats in this plan you'd find that most don't know. The nerve it takes to pile all kinds of pork into a plan that is supposed to be helping is beyond belief. We need fiscally responsible leaders, not just spenders. You can't spend your way out of this mess by borrowing against our future. Let us keep more of our income and give business a break. Those are the actions that would help. We run our individual budgets so much better than the government does. Let us decide how to improve the economy and things will get better a lot faster!!
