It took him a while, but Governor Mitt Romney has finally spoken out strongly against the economy stimulus package passed by Congress Wednesday. Romney criticized Democrats for passing the bill arguing it ‘includes too much unnecessary spending, doesn’t include enough tax cuts, and has way too many projects that wouldn’t happen in the next two years.’

“We have a short-term economic boost that’s needed, and this bill does not do that,” Romney said on MSNBC.

“Do what’s right for America, not what’s right politically,” he urged Democratic Congressmen.

If Romney wants to be the Republican frontrunner in 2012, he will have to step up his attacks of this ludicrous bill. He is the party’s main fiscal conservative leader, and expert on the economy. Romney knows how to run businesses and how to stimulate the economy. His party needs him to play a leadrole in the attack against the Democratic plan, and he needs to do so for his own (political) sake. Governor Sarah Palin is making headlines daily; Romney will have to do the same if he to be able to compete with her three years from now.

As said, not only should Romney throw himself into the debate about the economy for political reasons, he should also do so because he knows what he’s talking about. He’s quite an expert. America – and the world – needs him to explain why the Democrats’ plan is ineffective and costly and he also needs to communicate his party’s alternative plan clearly to the public. He can do so, probably better than any other leading Republican.

He’s not a member of Congress, but he has to play a major role in the debate.

He and all of need more of this.

c3 I'd recommend, as a business man, that he specifically speak against the "Buy American" parts of the stimulus package. I think it would do him well to be seen criticizing fellow businessmen (in this case US Steel) for their desire to "feed at the trough" and go against Romney's (presumed) free trade principles.

Jim Wellington Bravo to Romney! He is a genuine capitalist prophet in the economic wilderness. His vision is desperately needed but no one is listening in the capital. Here's a challenge: Have him take off his mirror-polished wingtips and his silk socks; trade in his expensive pinstriped suit, starched white shirt and silk tie for a hairshirt (take his cufflinks and his wristwatch away too); make him grow a beard, shave his head (yes - the famous hair) and then walk the streets of Washington as a bald and barefoot prophet proclaiming a return to fiscal sanity. Whatever we (and he) might lose by way of his dapper, perfect good looks, we will gain by his message.
