An Iranian newspaper reported on Tuesday that the terrorist organization Hezbollah has appointed a successor to current leader Hassan Nasrallah.

The Islamist terrorist organization believes Nasrallah to be a target of the Mossad, and therefore in danger of being assassinated.

If such a thing would occur, he would immediately be succeeded by Hashim Safei al-Deen, who is Nasrallah’s cousin. In other words, it’ll remain a family business.

Iranian newspaper Khorsid reported Monday that the group appointed al-Deen to make clear to Israel that even if Nasrallah would be assassinated, the organization would survive, and its morale would remain unaffected.

Another former leader of Hezbollah, Abbas al-Musawi, was assassinated in 1992.

Hezbollah’s move is surprising in so far that terrorist organizations seldom appoint a successor when the leader is still alive, but it is quite a risky move nonetheless. After all, Israel now has two prime targets. If it would take out al-Deen and Nasrallah at about the same time, the terrorist organization would be decapitated, or so some Israeli officials may think.

However, the problem with Hezbollah and similar organizations is that decapitating it is difficult. Even if four or five potential leaders would be killed at the same time, they would swiftly be replaced. Unlike what quite some Westerners (and Israelis) seem to think, killing a few individuals does not result in seriously weakening such organizations.
