Regular reader Christine Stanley wrote today that she believes that John McCain was the wrong man for the GOP, at the wrong place at the wrong time. Her view has become, she wrote, that he is simply not enough of an ideologue to offer Americans an alternative to Barack Obama’s plans.
Additionally, she writes:
I really feel like I don’t recognize our country anymore, and I don’t say that as someone who has been fooled into a fear of liberal boogeymen. I’m just incredulous that the center right in this country has seemingly disappeared- but I guess that’s what you would expect when there’s a failure of leadership from the right and liberal ideologues who are ready, willing and able to fill that void.
I think that this is a very valid point – leaders are missing. McCain may be many things, but he is not a leader of a party – he has shown that thus far. He is someone unable to bring others along, to inspire them to act, etc. Other Republicans have also proven unable to do so.
There are some Republicans out there, however, who should be able to become true leaders of a new conservative revival. I’m thinking especially of Bobby Jindal and Mitt Romney, both (former) governors.
