Canada’s liberal opposition claims that current Prime Minister Stephen Harper plagiarized a speech five years ago. According to the liberals, Harper gave the speech as opposition leader when he tried to convince his government to send troops to Iraq. The liberals, who formed the government then, now claim that over 50% of this speech was stolen from then Prime Minister of Australia John Howard.MORE

The news this week has been filled with ambulance-chasing coverage of efforts to stop the Great Wall Street Meltdown. Talking heads are making dire predictions.  Stocks are plummeting and plateauing.  Banks are closing.

The Republicans started it!  No, the Democrats started it! No, subprime lending started it!

No, it started when we forgot what a home is.

Scientists reported Monday that NASA’s Phoenix spacecraft discovered evidence of past water at its Martian landing and that the craft documented, for the first time, falling snow on this planet.

‘Soil experiments revealed the presence of two minerals known to be formed in liquid water. Scientists identified the minerals as calcium carbonate, found in limestone and chalk, and sheet silicate,’ CNN explained Tuesday. (more…)

Stanley Fish writes of what will become of President Bush after January 20, 2009. Although the position of baseball commissioner is mentioned in the article I’m personally hoping he becomes a Major League baseball commentator. I think in time he would join the sportscasting legends of John Madden and Bill Walton.

Shortly after the bailout bill failed to pass through U.S. Congress, U.S. President George W. Bush and Treasure Secretary Hank Paulson made clear that they had not given up hope of passing a similar bill soon.

Paulson said he was committed “to use all the tools available to protect our financial system and our economy,” adding: “Our tool kit is substantial but insufficient.” (more…)

The Associated Press reported earlier Tuesday that France and India signed a ‘major nuclear deal’ which ‘opens the way for the sale of French nuclear reactors to New Delhi.’

The deal comes shortly after the United States recognized India as a nuclear power, and made clear that it would not insist on nuclear disarmament. (more…)

The result of the failure of the U.S. House of Representatives to vote in the best interest of their nation and the world:

Japan’s Nikkei Index was down 4.12 percent while the Australian Securities Exchange fell 4.32 percent. The Hong Kong exchange dropped 1.4 percent.

he Korea Exchange in Seoul, South Korea, was down 0.72 percent, after being off more than three percent earlier. The American stock market was down almost 778 points at closing Monday — just under 7 percent.

The Gray Wolf has been put back on the endangered species list. The Bush administration declared that the gray wolf should be taken off, but a federal court overruled them Monday.

U.S. District Judge Paul Friedman in Washington sided with environmental groups that accused the government of misreading the law last year when it lifted protections for about 4,000 wolves in Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin. (more…)

Singer Janet Jackson was hospitalized on Monday, shortly before she would give a concert in Montreal, Canada. A representative for the famous singer said that she fell ill ‘suddenly.’ No word on what the cause for her illness may be.

Jackson was sound testing when she became ill and was rushed to the hospital immediately. (more…)
