Senator John McCain, the man who will represent the Republican Party during the presidential elections of November this year, ordered the cancellation of all but essential opening-day activities for the Republican Convention which is set to start Monday, due to the threat Hurricane Gustav poses to the Gulf Coast region.

“This is a time when we have to do away with our party politics and we have to act as Americans,” he said. (more…)

The Turkish government continues to present itself as a regional leader. After talking with both Israel and Syria about a potential peace agreement between the two enemies, Turkey is now working on a ‘Caucasian alliance.’

Such an alliance would, to a large degree, aim at establishing peace between Georgia and Russia, but it would accomplish more than just that. (more…)

The partisan nature of the blogosphere is taking on forms I never thought it would; serious, well respected, well read bloggers are making complete and utter fools of themselves.

Case in point, the blogger who wrote that McCain’s decision to ask Sarah Palin to become his running mate is “the most irresponsible decision by any leading presidential candidate since Bush picked Quayle.” (more…)

The decision of George W. Bush to start a ‘surge’ in Iraq in a final attempt to quench extremist violence was reached after a long and passionate internal debate, according to a report in the New York Times.

Many of his advisers told Bush not to order the surge. One of the opponents was the field commander. Another one… Defense Secretary Don Rumsfeld, who resigned and was replaced by Robert Gates. (more…)

Earlier Sunday it was announced that both Senator John McCain and his running mate for the presidency Governor Sarah Palin would travel to Mississippi in order to help people prepare for Hurricane Gustav.

A PKK attack in the east of Turkey on military installation left six people dead on Sunday. Two of those who died were Kurdish terrorists, four security personnel.

The attack is only one of the many that have, all in all, cost more than 35,000 people their lives. (more…)

William Kristol explains for the Weekly Standard why the far left is, in his opinion, scared to death of Sarah Palin.

The main reason Kristol gives is simple: ‘a working woman who’s a proud wife and mother; a traditionalist in important matters who’s broken through all kinds of barriers; a reformer who’s a Republican; a challenger of a corrupt good-old-boy establishment who’s a conservative; a successful woman whose life is unapologetically grounded in religious belief; a lady who’s a leader.’ (more…)

Approximately one day after thousands inhabitants of New Orleans decided to leave their homes before hurricane Gustav arrives, Mayor Ray Nagin called Gustav the “storm of the century” and told citizens to flee immediately. 

In recent days and hours hurricane Gustav has developed from a category 4 hurricane into a category 5 one. (more…)
