This is Plan Mexico a clone of Plan Colombia. The difference is Uribe at least directed the funds in a way he wanted and met the desired US position. Mexico is a different animal and this is money down a hole. Securing the border is right for a lot of reasons not just drug imports and associated crime. The cartels have power for reasons more than the US demand side of the drug trade.People that think legalizing drugs in America will somehow solve the problems of MS13 and other gang and cartel groups are mistaken.

corruption is a tricky thing. Half of it is greed, and half of it is fear that if you don't take the brides, you'll be killed. Because the cartels have so much power in Mexico, it is hard to realistically prevent them from killing those who resist bribes without some sort of intervention. As always, the devil will probably be in the details that won't get published on blogs, but hopefully this enforcement goes hand-in-hand with some anti-corruption reforms.

Bilbray is correct about Mexico, it'd be nice if there were some type of details though.

It's probably not just you, but it isn't me. The "War on Drugs" has failed in a million different ways. The consequences of the war are far more harmful than the actual drugs themselves.

Personally I don't think the US should be fighting a "war on drugs" themselves, let alone funding someone elses. Legalize and tax the stuff and you take the power out of the hands of the drug cartels.
Besides, giving money to Mexico always has the risk that you're indirectly giving it to the cartels anyway, given the corruption there.
