huckabee11

Mike Huckabee brought his low-budget campaign to College Station, Texas today and wowed an overflowing auditorium filled primarily with Texas A&M University college students with his populist conservative message.

I certainly expect Texas’ young conservatives to be out in force Tuesday if their response to today’s speech is any indication of their support for him.

For them – and for many of the rest of us – Mike Huckabee is the only choice they can make without compromising some important principles. There is no second option because, despite John McCain’s recent conservative conversion, no one else represents conservative values of smaller government, balanced budgets, lower taxes, individual responsibility, and the sanctity of human life. Mike Huckabee is the only one who holds these values and he’s the man who deserves our votes next week.

The fact that John McCain may be more electable in the general campaign is unimportant. Our principles matter, as does the demonstration of those principles. Show them and politicians who are willing to embrace them will appear; hide them and our choices will be limited even further.

The university, which is my alma matter, College Station, and Texas are all tailor-made for Huckabee and his vision of personal and moral responsibility.

People here are more conservative by nature, naturally reluctant to embrace government as a savior or even a safety net, and sure of themselves and God than almost anywhere else in the U.S. There is something different about Texas, however elusive that difference can be to define.

One truth that Huckabee knows is that Texans don’t like it when outsiders try to tell us how things are going to be. Huckabee joked that what he’d really like to see is the talking heads in the media sitting around after the polls close on Tuesday scratching their heads and admitting that they don’t know how he did it but Mike Huckabee has defeated John McCain in Texas.

Big applause. Big. Here’s Huckabee’s trimmed down conservative message:

“The smart thing to do is pick someone who believes that it is not the purpose of government to fix us, it’s the purpose of us to fix the government.”

Right on. Listening to Hillary Clinton’s array of proposals to jump-start American innovation in the green energy sector, I have to admit being inspired by her vision. But the reality is that change happens in its own time, when the time and opportunity are both ripe, not when a charismatic politician begins to talk about it during an election cycle.

True, words can act as a catalyst, but when the initial burst of inspiration as fuel is burned up the process of change is unable to continue on its course because it’s momentum was artificial and the resulting inertia insufficient. That’s the essence of the problem with Hillary’s green energy plans and it’s the problem with Barack Obama’s empty words. Markets and opportunities are not created by taxing and spending – they’re created by demand and when green energy is demanded by consumers it will flower as an industry but will struggle until then.

During the speech Huckabee spoke at some length about his Fair Tax plan and received a thunderous ovation. It may very well be that my taxes will go up under Huckabee’s plan. I don’t know if that’s the case and the truth is that I don’t care. A simple, fair tax system that citizens understand is more appropriate than one that is so complex that even the I.R.S. has difficulty interpreting their own rules. 67,000 pages of tax code? Please!

Huckabee’s related stump story was about a man working 2 jobs to put his daughter through college. Unfortunately he was being taxed more on his second job than his first and struggling even though he was doing everything humanly possible. A tug at our heartstrings? Sure. It’s also utterly wrong. It’s wrong

Speaking about his position as a conservative, Huckabee said that he makes no apologies for being a conservative.

“The most important challenge is that we move this country vertically, to make sure it goes up and not down.”

The change the Democratic candidates are promising is not better but is instead expensive. The promises already made by one unnamed Democratic candidate will cost over $300B to implement.

“Remember, when government does something for you it first has to take something from you.”

Also true. Even the most liberal citizen must admit that the government creates no revenue on its own. It has no sales and no customers. To provide a benefit to one person it must take something from someone else. It’s that simple and, frankly, that wrong when taken beyond the minimum necessary level.

One thing that Huckabee brings to the table that America needs in a big way is a sense of humility. He says:

“You aren’t elected to the ruling class, you’re elected to the servant class”

That’s something the Democratic candidates have long since forgotten and their solutions, which always seem to center around the idea that they know better than the people they govern how our individual resources should be managed, reflect that.

While I respect John McCain and will vote for him if he gains the Republican nomination, I still believe that Mike Huckabee is the president that America needs in 2008.

casualobserver I don't share your sentiment for Huckabee, Marc, but appreciate the propogation of conservative principles. As long as the Huckabee campaign stays on that focus and not one of trying to derail McCain, I wish you well.

Beth Marc, you have stated so very eloquently what we, Mike Huckabee's supporters, believe. Great article, well-written, to-the-point and engaging. I will definitely share this link. Texas, we are counting on you!

Linda Rayborn Mike Huckabee is the Republican's version of Obama, only with SUBSTANCE!!!  This man is the politician of a lifetime and a true leader who can take this country up and unite us as one nation.  He got behind in this race only because he was splitting votes with 3 other conservatives while McCain racked up all the liberal votes.  I know he could beat Obama in November.  Can you imagine the two of them in a debate:  both eloquent speakers, but Huck has a plan with his message, Obama has fluff.  I like McCain fine but I don't believe he can get the vote out to be the democrats.  I will vote Mike Huckabee even if I write him in....

Delana Newton You said it well!  Now if the "media" & "political elites," had not tried to silence him by ignoring him, the rest of the country would have heard what you heard - Huckabee, would be the Reublican. Candidate of choice by now! Please go out and vote for Huckabee - Although I was born in Texas, I live in Mississippi now and we haven't voted yet - does my vote really count? Thanks Thanks for your view.

Jennifer This is a fabulous article! Mike Huckabee and the author of this article inspire me! FairTax actually makes sense! I looked at the information and was blown away at how much money I would save through the Huckabee tax plan. Let the purchases you buy create the taxation, the hard work that you do. I work with college students, and know the struggles many families have to make college possible. Often its the taxation in this country that has the greatest affect on families ability to pay for school- penalty for working, yet having to work in order to live. I really hope that TX and Ohio (and eventually the other states) take hold of Mike Huckabee's message, and give him the votes he needs. Again, Thanks for this great article!!!

Carol Great article! It is true that Huckabee offers real, practical, affordable change for the better. Guess that's why the media and establishment aren't interested. What would they have to complain and fight about then? My vote, my money, my voice  -- only for Huckabee.

Deandra Paul, we ALL wish the GOP would have another debate, but McCain is unwilling to lower himself to participate. His arrogance in dismissing the overwhelming number of requests for this meeting by the Republican electorate has cost him my vote in November, no matter what.

EuropeanTraveler How refreshing to read an article about Mike Huckabee that is clear, concise, truthful and factual!  Congratulations to you, Marc Moore, for becoming one of the first journalists to set the record straight!  Mike Huckabee is the ONLY conservative Republican running!  He has been the ONLY Republican candidate who has been consistent and unwavering in his beliefs and views.  Even with the press ignoring him and then chastising him for his principles and beliefs, Huckabee stood tall and stood his ground!  Now, Huckabee is calling on all Texans; all those in Ohio, Rhode Island and Vermont, to vote their conscience!  Let's get out there and vote for Mike and show the pundits and the nay-sayers that conservatism is alive and well in our country and NOBODY from the media or the upper-crust of Washington is going to tell us who to vote for!!!  VOTE FOR MIKE HUCKABEE-BELIEVE that in great numbers WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!!!

Gary L. Hern President elect Mike Huckabee,  I voted for you in the primary because you are instrumental in God's plan for America.  1.  Abortion.  2.  Fair taxes.  3.  Military strength.  4.  Spiritual leader- ship.  5.  Please support shale oil as a government right to pay off the national debt and to pay for the Medical ventures.  6.  No new taxes.  7.  New jobs for the infrastructure in America.  8.  Enlist the United States Army with the National Guard to support and back up the Boarder agencies and man power.  Any guard on army per- sonel who are getting out shoul be converted on day-one to have that same job as a civilian.  8.  Push for gold to go to $1990. an oz. this will stave off the Euro with our non dependace of foreigh oil and the supper strength of an abuntance of Gold.  9.  Make Sun- day a no work day for America.  (Saturday for Jews and Muslims) This will eliminate the need for oil, electricity, and bring families together.  10.  Marriage is sacred same as abortion.  And Yes, the ten commandments are a legal document..  We need to investigate the ACLU and it's non elected members, who delight in attacking laws which are democratically voted for and close down these alien harboring liberals.  It will cost America way too much money for America to switch over to the Democrats!  No new democrats!  Finally, as much as we all like to throw stones at foreign invest- ments like China, Japan, Germany we need these people to buy our American Goods.  Mexico and Canada need us as much as we need them.  Install two Ellis Islands - One in San Diego and the other in El Paso, this is needed to educate mexicans to the laws and to our english speaking system in order for they can come to America.  1.  You must have a sponsor.  2.  You must have a job or college to come to before comming to America.  3.  You either have had to be assimulated from Ellis Island or another privately ap- proved institution with basic guarantee that you qualify to be in the United States of America.   Thank You!  garylhern@gmail.com

Siloam4huck Thank you for noticing what both the MSM and the "Fair and Balanced" network willfully ignore:  the solid conservative, executive record and credentials of former Arkansas two-term governor Mike Huckabee.   The fact that they alternate between calling him a liberal and an evangelical niche candidate shows (1) they don't really understand him and (2) what they do understand, they hate but can't admit it. He's more conservative than any of them, but they must publicly ignore this, pretend they don't see it.  Otherwise they'd have to acknowledge the boldness and rightness of his Fair Tax position;  the consistency of his social conservative positions; the utterly impressive skills he has as a communicator.   Why, that would be admitting that it took a Baptist minister to stand up for their platform;  admitting that they themselves were so sluggish and slow to step out, and I mean really step out, on human life and small government, that to fire up the base on any conservative issues in 2008, it took a no-name "Evangelical Christian" (hold nose and screw face up tight) with no New England credentials, no connections, no organization, and no money. Country Club G.O.P. has neither the humility nor the sheer stones to cop to all this.  They'd rather put up their worst enemy for the nomination then get behind Huckabee...and that's exactly what they're trying to do.

Edith L.Edwards Great Article!  How sad that the Republican Machine is so out of touch with the people of America.  Too bad the media and the party are trying to do our voting for us! Thank you, Gov. Huckabee, for staying in the race.  You are the only true conservative. I respected Sen. McCain, but with his refusal to debate, it has terminated it for me; I will not vote for him in November, even if he is the nominee.  I am in my sixties and have always been a committed, voting Republican.  That may have to change! In November I will vote for Huckabee or write-in Huckabee!

kranky kritter I think Huckabee doesn't know F%*K-all about taxes.  All he has is a populist platitude.                                                                                                                                                                                                               I'm happy to acknowledge that a simple and easy-to-understand tax policy sounds swell. But it's a total fantasy, the american economics equivalent of receiving 70 virgins in heaven. I have absolutely zero expectation that we'll see substantial tax reform in my lifetime, and I'm only 40. And I'll go further. If we do enact some sort of tax simplification, we'll spend the next 30 years complicating it back up again to help all the people who think they're not being treated fairly under the new system.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               You gotta be rock stupid to think substantial tax reform will ever happen. Too many plans and too many different constituencies. Nowhere near enough consensus on any one. You might as well carve the home-interest deduction on George Washington's forehead on Mt. Rushmore, unless the new plan replaces it with double cashback bonuses.

If you take the time to go to www.fairtax.org and really study the proposal, you'll find that it's a thoroughly researched, reasonable plan- a bill with substantial sponsorship in Congress already. Just because we've been taxed to death all our lives doesn't mean we have to maintain the status quo.

Then, this whole process will go to the Republican Convention and all bets are off!  The delegates will make the choice of who will represent our party and Mike will "WOW" them with his brilliant, oratorical skills and true, conservative convictions, principles, and message!  WE CAN DO THIS IF WE STICK TO OUR PRINCIPLES AND WORK TOGETHER!   LET'S DO IT!  VOTE FOR MIKE!
