The latest poll shows that Mitt Romney is slightly ahead in Florida at this point in time. “Romney gets the support of most of those voting on the economy and immigration, while McCain is backed by those most concerned about terrorism,” said Mason-Dixon managing director Brad Coker.
30% of Florida Republicans say they support the former Governor of Massachusetts, against 26% who support John McCain. Rudy Giuliani is in third place with only 18%.
If these trends continue, we’ll probably see Giuliani drop out Wednesday or something. A close second place finish would be, perhaps, acceptable for him, but a distant third? With all the money and energy he has put into Florida?
No, Florida is a race between two men, and at this moment most polls have Romney in the lead. If he beats McCain in Florida, he’s the instant frontrunner, especially if you combine that potential win with the knowledge that he’ll have enough money to compete in every single state on Super Tuesday (and beyond).
And for those who are wondering whether this poll is just off or something there’s this: Rasmussen also has Romney in the lead with 4%. 27% against 23%.
Hugh Hewitt summarizes: “There is still tremendous volatility in the electorate, and conservative voters wishing to end the attempt by MSM to jam down McCain’s nomination on an unwilling party could continue to move to Romney to block that result.”
We’ll see about that, but it’s certainly true that the media want the GOP to nominate McCain. Does the electorate have a different opinion?
