Taiwan’s March 2008 referendum will evidently take place without much support from the United States.  Per the BBC:

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice says Washington is strongly opposed to Taiwan’s plan for a referendum on United Nations membership.

Ms Rice said applying to the UN in the name of “Taiwan” was a “provocative policy” – it raised tensions in the Taiwan Strait “unnecessarily”.

The buzz at the Sacramento Bee is that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger will soon ask the state legislature to approve a massive release of prisoners who are thought to be of low risk to the general population:

According to details of a budget proposal made available to The Bee, the administration will ask the Legislature to authorize the release of certain non-serious, nonviolent, non-sex offenders who are in the final 20 months of their terms. (more…)

UPDATED with audio
A while ago an unnamed Huckabee aide in DC criticized conservative talk radio show host Rush Limbaugh. Obviously, no one expects him to stay quiet after such criticism so, those who can, listened to his show today. Since I’m not in the US I can’t listen to it live, but – luckily – Jim Geraghty was good enough to liveblog the show for NRO.

Limbaugh didn’t disappoint us: (more…)

The latest polls are in: Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton are now tied in New Hampshire. 32% of Democratic NH voters say they support Clinton, the same amount say they support Obama. This means that the first two primaries will be incredibly close and exciting.

For all the talk about an upcoming ‘coronation’ of Clinton, she’s having quite a hard time. She had a major lead, much like Rudy Giuliani, but Obama has come closer and closer. At this moment, he’s got a real shot at winning the Democratic nomination. (more…)

In the Wall Street Journal column, conservative columnist – and former Reagan speech writer – Peggy Noonan takes a closer look at Mike Huckabee’s Christmas ad, his character, his style, and his campaign strategy. It’s an interesting read, I suggest you all read it in its entirety (as usual, it’s a pleasure to just read her column, no matter what she says; her style is superb).MORE

UPDATE: Charles Johnson has more. A person who calls himself Bill White, Commander of the American National Socialist Workers Party, says that Ron Paul’s campaign has met with white supremacists. True, not true? Who knows, he certainly is making life increasingly more difficult for himself. (more below the fold)

Well, not sitting in a tree, but… (more…)

Britney Spears’ 16-year old sister, Jamie Lynn, is pregnant. She announced the news earlier this week while saying that it’s best not to have sex before you’re married.

The news was a shock for her parents. “She’s the responsible one,” her mother, Lynn, told reporters.

Well, perhaps she’ll be a very responsible teenage mother, compared to her sister at least.

Not only was it a big shock to Lynn Spears, a book publisher was in shock as well: Lynn Spears has written a book on parenting.MORE

The longer the war in Iraq lasts the more Muslims, even fundamentalists, believe that Al Qaeda is not a blessing for Muslims and that the ‘Jihad’ against America is, in fact, a disaster. Strategy Page reports:

Three years ago, Saudi cleric Salman al Awdah, and 25 like-minded preachers, issued a religious ruling, that it was justifiable for Iraqis to fight American “invaders.” Al Awdah had also been a supporter of Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda. But now al Awdah has changed his tune, as have many of his supporters, and he has come out against Islamic terrorism.MORE

Barack Obama said recently that he would consider putting Republicans in his cabinet. He even named a few Republicans he’d consider appointing: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Richard Lugar, John Warner, Chuck Hagel and Tom Coburn.

Some explanations:

Sen. Dick Lugar: “He’s a Republicans who I worked with on issues of arms control, wonderful guy.MORE

Noooooooooooo:

The Red Light District is a neighborhood in Amsterdam where women sit, barely dressed, behind windows, while trying to persuade passersby to come inside to have some good ol’ fun. Most of these women are from Eastern Europe, and, contrary to prejudice, beautiful. They wear incredibly revealing clothes; their beautiful, long legs are spread out as if they want to welcome you… OK, sorry about that, what I mean to say is: it’s the prostitute district.

Sadly for those of us who like to look atMORE
