This is just silly: Dallas News has declared “the illegal immigrant” person (Texan) of the year.”
He breaks the law by his very presence. He hustles to do hard work many Americans won’t, at least not at the low wages he accepts. The American consumer economy depends on him. America as we have known it for generations may not survive him,” Dallas News reports.
The progressives who appear to be in charge of the news organization go on to write: “To their champions, illegal immigrants are decent, hardworking people who, like generations of European immigrants before them, just want to do better for their families and who contribute to America’s prosperity. They must endure hatred and abuse by those of us who want the benefits of cheap labor but not the presence of illegal immigrants.”
It’s a long essay, I suggest you read it. Conservatives are likely to be filled with anger, while many moderates and liberals may think to themselves “yeah, I agree with that,” but, regardless of your views on immigration, I encourage you to read the essay in its entirety.
Deserved? Undeserved? As far as I’m concerned the question about illegal immigration is a very interesting, albeit complicated one. The anti-illegal immigration crowd often pretends that it’s very simple, but the reality of the matter is that it’s not. 15 million illegals: it’s impossible to send them back. It’s just not going to happen. Aside from that, it’s undeniably true that illegals do work for a pay Americans don’t want to. Some argue, then, that companies should simply pay Americans more to do the same work. OK, what do you think the result of that will be? Entire companies will cease to exist.
But is the “illegal immigrant” the person of the year (or Texan)? Of course not. Firstly, I find it utterly ridiculous that newspapers call entire groups, anonymous individuals mostly, “person of the year.” That’s ludicrous. It’s about what one individual has done. Furthermore, like it or not, as it is, illegal immigrants are breaking the law. Constantly. Every day they’re in America, they break it. I’m not sure how anyone who breaks the law constantly can be the person of the year, especially not in a situation in which people can also migrate legally to the US.
The only difference between illegal and legal immigration? It takes a while longer.
