Two interesting articles about the political situation in Turkey right now: yesterday was an exciting day, to say the least.

Today’s Zaman:

Justice and Development Party (AK Party) leader and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, speaking Wednesday at the meeting of his party’s parliamentary group meeting, commented on the decision of the Constitutional Court concerning the first round of the presidential election.MORE

A great review of All the President’s Men at The Moderate Voice by Dan Schneider; one of the best reviewers on the Net.

A fascinating article at the NYT:

As they gather Thursday night at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library for their first debate, the Republican presidential candidates are thrilled at the chance to associate themselves with Reagan. But they may not be able to escape the challenge created for them by the current president.

As much as Iraq or health care or any other issue, the question of how to deal with President Bush is vexing the Republican field.MORE

Two interesting posts got published at The Impolitic recently. The first one by Libby Spencer:

September seems to be the unofficial timetable on rank and file GOP patience. So what to do now? Maha Barb articulates my current leanings. We have a president run amok who is so stubborn he will never back down, no matter what the cost. It’s time to reframe the battle from Democrats vs. Republicans to Congress vs. the White House.MORE

Harvey C. Mansfield wrote an op-ed for the WSJ’s Opinion Journal. The title of the piece: The Case for the Strong Executive. The subtitle: Under some circumstances, the rule of law must yield to the need for energy.

Read that subtitle again.

And then read it again.

Think about it for a while. Think about what he is saying.

The rule of law should never yield to anything. The rule of law is at the very foundation of the freedom we all enjoy in the West. It is the highest law, so to speak.MORE

Jack “can’t get much more left-wing than me” Murtha said on Hardball that General Patraeus only talks to the news media, ignores (most of) Congress and only came to Washington to make “political statements.” You can watch the video at Hot Air.

Well, at least Murtha knows what he is talking about, doesn’t he.

England’s countryside seems to be in trouble.

The silky brown calf looks up, pleading, it flings its head from side to side before it is shot between the eyes. The farmer has paid the kennelman £2 and a packet of fudge to kill the newborn male calf and feed it to the hounds.

A sick cow is next on the list: she is shot because the farmer can’t pay for antibiotics. A limping horse is blasted by a pistol because the vet’s fees are too expensive.MORE

Pajamas Media reports that Iraqi authorities said that “the leader of al-Qaeda’s political front organization the Islamic State of Iraq, Abu Omar al-Baghdadi, was killed in the Ghazaliya district in western Baghdad this morning.”

The US army declined to comment thusfar, but U.S. military spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Christopher Garver did say that ‘a news conference would be held later on Thursday to announce the “success” of an operation against al Qaeda.MORE

Well, Fred Thompson succeeded in pissing the left-wing of the Democratic Party off by saying that MoveOn and Harry Reid are “adhering, to the extent they can, to the most left-wing element of their base.”

Faiz and others can try to make themselves look like the mainstream all they can, but these people are even considered to be left-wing here, in the Netherlands.

Even Daily Kos repeats the talking point:MORE
