David Broder wrote a very interesting column for the Washington Post about… Harry Reid. Broder’s thesis: Reid is just as incompetent as Alberto Gonzales.

Here’s a Washington political riddle where you fill in the blanks: As Alberto Gonzales is to the Republicans, Blank Blank is to the Democrats — a continuing embarrassment thanks to his amateurish performance.MORE

H/t Joe

US president George W. Bush proved that he is a horrible dancer:

Yeah – I think it is safe to say that Laura didn’t fall for Bush’s ‘moves’.

I appreciate this though: he interacts with the people, he shows that he does not take himself too seriously, etc.

It’s always good when politicians / leaders show that – in the end – they are human beings as well.

I had to analyze Capra’s It’s a Wonderful Life for American Society II yesterday – had to write an essay, a classmate had to do a presentation. It is, of course, one of the great classics, one, in my opinion, everybody should watch. If you haven’t watched it yet, or haven’t watched it in a long time and want to watch it again, you can do so at Google Video.

Romantic? Yes. Emotional? Yes. Overdoing it a bit? Yes.

A deserved classic nonetheless?

Yes.

A very interesting column by Andrew Klavan about political correctness, civility and conservatives / conservatism. Andrew writes:

The thing I like best about being a conservative is that I don’t have to lie. I don’t have to pretend that men and women are the same. I don’t have to declare that failed or oppressive cultures are as good as mine. I don’t have to say that everyone’s special or that the rich cause poverty or that all religions are a path to God.MORE

I link to the best original reporter of the blogosphere, Michael J. Totten, quite often. He publishes some great posts about Iran, Lebanon, the Middle East in general. He knows what he is talking about: I am sitting comfortably at home in the Netherlands, he’s traveling to some of the most chaotic, albeit interesting places of the world. If you don’t pay a regular visit to his blog, do so from now on. Seriously: he reports, where the MSM dare not go (well, that’s overdoing it a bit, but you get my drift).MORE

Fred Thompson, who is expected to announce that his candidacy pretty soon, has a radio show at ABC Radio Networks called The Thompson Report “which contains the commentaries and opinons of” him. In the latest show, he dealt with the shooting at Virginia Tech, the response of the University, the (lack of) use of (the latest) technology, the war on terrorism, etc. The commentary also got published at the website of the show. Excerpt:MORE

A great article at The American Conservative by W. James Antle III about the current state of the Republican Party and its presidential candidates:

Litmus tests must go. That is the rallying cry of those who believe Republicans should drop their insistence that the party’s 2008 presidential candidate toe the line on taxes, abortion, guns, or immigration. Wartime, the argument goes, is no time for conservatives to demand ideological purity.MORE
